Thicker roots. Greener grass.
Chicago-area soils are naturally heavy in clay, which compacts easily from foot traffic, mowing, and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. Compacted soil chokes your lawn's roots, preventing water, air, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. The result? Thin, stressed turf that's vulnerable to weeds, drought, and disease.
Core aeration is the single most impactful thing you can do for your lawn's long-term health. Combined with overseeding, it transforms thin, struggling lawns into thick, lush turf that crowds out weeds naturally.
Aeration holes allow water to penetrate deep into the root zone instead of running off the surface. Your lawn uses water more efficiently, reducing the need for irrigation.
Loosened soil lets roots grow deeper, making your lawn more resilient to heat, drought, and heavy use. Deep-rooted lawns stay green longer in summer.
When combined with overseeding, aeration fills in bare spots and thin areas, creating a dense lawn that naturally resists weeds.
Our professional aerating machine pulls thousands of small soil plugs (about 2-3 inches deep) from your lawn. This mechanically breaks through compacted soil and thatch layers, creating channels for air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone.
The soil plugs are left on the surface and break down naturally within 1-2 weeks, returning nutrients to the lawn. You'll notice improved drainage, deeper roots, and thicker growth within weeks of aeration.
Immediately after aeration, we spread premium grass seed blends across your lawn. Seeds fall into the aeration holes where they have direct soil contact — the ideal conditions for germination. This is significantly more effective than broadcasting seed onto a non-aerated lawn.
We use grass seed varieties specifically selected for Chicago's climate (USDA Zone 5b), including improved Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, and Fine Fescue blends bred for disease resistance, drought tolerance, and a deep green color.
